When The Storm Breaks

The Monday challenge at D’verse is to write a quadrille using the word “sip.” (A quadrille is a poem of exactly 44 words, not including the title.) This one started out very differently, but paring down to 44 words took it in a different direction.

When The Storm Breaks

summer storm promises heat and wet
silk sodden air
shivers between us

lightning touches lips,
a constellation of sparks
strike the tangled root-core below,
an aeromancy

suspend belief, suspend breath,
hold taught edges of bone and skin
and sip fire
when the storm breaks
